When it comes to anime, Netflix has been on a tear recently. In November, the streaming service announced that it was creating a live-action version ofCowboy Bebop, new shows set in the worlds ofPacific RimandAltered Carbon, and that it was bringingNeon Genesis Evangelionto subscribers. Now, another classic is coming:Ghost in the Shell.

As spotted byio9, Netflix announced that a newGhost in the Shellanime is coming —Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045which will be directed byShinji Aramaki (Appleseed), and Kenji Kamiyama (Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex). Netflix doesn’t reveal any additional details, other than to say that it will be released sometime in 2020.

For the uninitiated, Ghost in the Shell is a long-running anime franchise that began its life as a cyberpunk manga in 1989, following a cyborg named Major Motoko Kusanagi who worked in a counter-cyberterrorist organization called Public Security Section 9. It was later adapted into a feature film in 1995, as well as several follow-up TV shows and sequels. Notoriously, Paramount’s live-action adaptation of the story sparked controversy over the casting of Scarlett Johansson as Major Motoko Kusanagi. Hopefully, this new story will be just the thing for fans to put that recent film firmly behind them.
